WOODWARD IDS is the world’s sole system supplier that supplies complete system solutions for medium to large systems with linear motion electrical machines.

The WOODWARD IDS scope of supply includes:

  • •    Linear motion electrical machines (with or without liquid cooling)
  • •    Sensors for position and speed measurements
  • •    Stator segment switches
  • •    Converters
  • •    Control system
The power density, which is achieved in combination with linear induction motors, can be increased up to 18 kN/m; i.e. 1.8t per 1m motor which is world record for power density.
Long Stator

Long stator elements (length typically 0.5 – 0.7m) are available as units and can be lined up according to the required acceleration section. The long stator elements are designed for wide ranges of currents and voltages adapted to the required speed of the respective system. Long stators are iron-free and available as liquid cooled elements.

Linear Rotor Element

Linear rotor elements (length typically 0.20 m) can be lined up and installed underneath the vehicle. This solution allows to vary the length of the linear rotor.

Stator Segment Switches for Long Stators

Stator segment switches are semiconductor switching devices installed for controlling the energy flow to the various stator segments of the linear motor. The stator segment switches are designed for wide ranges of currents and voltages – naturally, adapted to the different stator types.

Sensors for Linear Rotor Units

Sensors permit registering the position and speed of the vehicle. These sensors are installed between the stator elements and are capable of identifying the magnetic variations caused by the rotor elements. This measurement process is very robust and is ideal for outdoor applications (the process cannot be influenced by ambient conditions such as rain, dust etc.)
