Mining trucks are capable of loading up to 360t of material. The latest generations of trucks is driven by diesel-electric drive systems that offer significant benefits in comparison to conventional drive systems.

Efficiency and safety are increased significantly. An innovative converter module developed by WOODWARD IDS is the key element of these diesel-electric drive systems. It is designed for two or four wheeled vehicles.


WOODWARD IDS converters are the most compact main drives worldwide. The dimensions of a 5 MW main drive for a mining truck are (WxHxD): 3.0 m  x  1.6 m  x  1.6 m. The converters are scalable and designed for two or four wheeled trucks.

The WOODWARD IDS converters for mining applications are internally short-circuit proof and can also handle short-circuits at output terminals. Additionally, the traction converters are designed for an overload capacity of 250 %.
