The key component of a wind turbine’s electrical system is the electrical frequency converter. This device alters the generator’s electrical output so it can be fed directly into the network. Most WOODWARD IDS electrical frequency converters for wind turbines run autonomously – night and day, under all weather conditions and far-off from our diagnostics centre.

WOODWARD IDS offers many years of experience in the design, production and product-support of converters in wind turbines.

As the world’s sole manufacturer, WOODWARD IDS is capable of delivering electrical frequency converter products for all types of wind turbines with:

  • double-fed asynchronous machines within a power range of 0.5–5 MW
  • gearless synchronous generators within a power range of 0.5–5 MW
  • static converter cascades with slip ring machines up to 2500 kW

WOODWARD IDS converter systems for wind turbines are certified and comply with stringent technical requirements (e.g. E.On standard) for infeed of electrical power into the power supply networks of most EU countries such as Germany, Great Britain, France and Spain.

WOODWARD IDS converter solutions have been operating successfully in wind turbine systems since 2001. In comparison with other systems, the 2.5 MW wind turbines have proven to be the most economical installation size. WOODWARD IDS converters for wind turbine applications are considered to be the most compact systems in their category and allow for the installation in nacelles.
Alongside the actual energy transmission function, the converters offer additional features such as:

  • Suppression of drive train vibrations
  • Reactive power compensation
  • Combined operation with diesel generators and solar power systems
  • Remote diagnostics with a holistic, effective service concept.
Our extensive experience in developing and constructing innovative and reliable converters may prove valuable for your needs. We would be pleased to see you among our satisfied customers.
